Dear Democratic Socialist, Please Change Your Name!
I’m going to keep this short and simple.
I’m currently working on polling software and the goal is to create a platform that allows “authentic people to provide authentic data”. To test the idea I ran a few test survey questions. I wanted to get public opinion data on what the US citizens thought of the term “Socialism” so I sent this survey to a very small but diverse sample size of people with various backgrounds and levels of education:

The Results
72% of people thinks that people should be able to earn money for their creations.
68% of people thinks Socialism is the opposite of Capitalism.
39% of people think that Fidel Castro is more socialist than Ghandi and Martin Luther King. 33% responded “None of the bove.” 17% (MLK). 11% (Ghandi).
The Analysis
- Most Americans believe in Capitalism.
- A majority of Americans think if you believe in socialism then you are anti capitalism.
- Fidel Castro and the Cuban people are what some Americans identify as socialism.
My Feedback
This is just one experiment and it may mean absolutely nothing to most. But to me this data is very informative and can help secure a victory for Bernie Sanders in the 2020 election.
Bernie Sanders is in love with his identify. Meaning, everywhere he goes he loves to tell people that he’s a “Democratic Socialist”. I’m guessing it’s his way of differentiating himself from the traditional democratic establishment. The only problem is the world doesn’t react to the world “socialist” the same way he does and I think he should stop using it. If he doesn’t stop using it, I fear that the democratic establishment and Donald Trump will frame Bernie Sanders as the next Fidel Castro (a communist?) and they will convince the American people into thinking Bernie Sanders will turn the US into Cuba. They will show interviews of Cuban citizens crying and sharing stories of how amazing Cuba was before Castro and what it is today with a Castro influenced government.
I think Bernie Sanders should keep all of his policies the same but make this one small adjustment to his campaign; he should stop referring to himself as a Democratic Socialist and start referring to himself as a Democratic Capitalist.

A democrat is a person who believes in the rule of the people. The prefix demo- means “common people”.
Capitalist means someone that believes people should make money for their ideas.
A Democratic Capitalist or Social Capitalist is someone who thinks that the people should make money together. Simple as as that. This new idea doesn’t require Bernie Sanders to change any of his policies, he will just need to change his identity by replacing Socialist with Capitalist. This label is a more accurate representation of who he really is and it is a simple change. The only thing that will stop him from making this change is his ego. It’s weird to hear but I truly believe Bernie Sanders is more of a Capitalist than he is a Socialist. I do not believe that Bernie Sanders believes that all creations should be shared by the community. If he believed this then he would have shared the millions of dollars that he earned from his books with all of the citizens of Vermont. However, I do think he believes that some profits of those earnings should be shared by the community.
We live in a world where your identifiers are more important than your beliefs. And what’s interesting about this is that the most effective way of identifying yourself is with words and for whatever reasons, words are able to change meanings throughout time. It’s just a small idea I had but this is definitely something I think his supporters and campaign should think about it.
